People always say to love what you do and do what you love, but it is rare to meet someone who fully embraces this mantra. Actress Daniella Alonso embodies this kind of contagious enthusiasm.
Alonso most recently landed a prominent role in Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, yet remains ever humble. “Ever since I was little, I’ve loved movies. Since I was six years old, I knew that I loved how they made me feel and I wanted to be able to express those emotions; happy sad, excited. I just wanted to connect and make people feel those same emotions.”
This particular film is one of her first comedies, and to be a part of it was, according to Alonso, “pretty special.” In this sequel, Paul Blart, played by Kevin James, attends a convention at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. Alonso plays Divina Martinez, the general manager of the hotel. She is ultimately in charge of everything running smoothly, and her boyfriend Eduardo Furtillo is the head of security, played by Eduardo Verástegui. After an elaborate art heist is carried out, Martinez starts to fall for Blart.
From TV to the big screen, her acting style has changed throughout her career. “I’ve grown a lot, and with experience comes getting better. I don’t care as much about what people think, whether it’s right or wrong. Before, I wanted it to be perfect. I give myself more freedom now to make mistakes and not be perfect.” And whether she is more keen on acting on TV than movies, she explains, “I love both, but when I’m on film I want to do TV, and when I’m on TV I want to do film. I love them both equally but in different ways.”
Aside from her acting chops, the most striking characteristic of Alonso is her respect for family and heritage. Thinking back to who has left a lasting imprint on Alonso’s morals, her grandmother comes to mind. “My grandmother was such a tough go-getter. She was so inspiring in how strong she was and how she took care of everybody, but it never stressed her out. That attitude is so important in this industry. I try not to doubt myself and if I do doubt myself, I just snap myself out of it. Why not me? I can do that. You only get one life, so do what makes you happy.”
And acting certainly makes her happy. A dream role of hers is Alice in Closer, a play-turned-movie. “That role to me is such a challenge that would be scary, but in a good way. The complexities of sadness and anguish make the role beautiful.” As far as actresses she looks up to, she notes, “Cate Blanchett is just incredible. She can do no wrong. I would love to just to be on set and see what she does.”
So if you’ve ever dreamed of acting, Alonso is quite the role model for success. She explains, “You hear it all the time, but looking at the business side and how choices get made, always believe in yourself and your ability. You are where you need to be, what you are is what you are and someone will eventually see that and want to work with you. Don’t try to fit into a mold. Be present and be happy with where you are. Roles come and go; in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. Just try to be happy.”
