The Windy City’s biggest weekend in music will kickoff on Wednesday, July 27th with Pandora’s 3rd annual Chicago invasion. Located at Morgan Manufacturing, the free show will headline keyboardist Matt Johnson and drummer Kim Schifino of Matt & Kim, the indie dance duo that has been churning out hits since the release of their debut album. It was at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York that the two first met and began dating, not sealing their musical partnership until after Johnson’s 2004 graduation. The couple began performing around their Brooklyn neighborhood, before embarking on their first national tour and releasing the EP, To/From.
However it wasn’t until their self-titled debut album dropped in 2006 that they truly began amassing the respect of the electric-pop world. Matt & Kim have gone on to release 5 studio albums and grace the festival stages of Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bonnaroo and more. Their energetic performance style and creative music videos have garnered quite the bit of publicity, only furthering the band’s momentum. They most notably stripped down and strolled through Times Square in New York City for their Lessons Learned video, a bold move that went on to earn them the Breakthrough Video Award at the MTV VMA’s.
Their most recent album, New Glow, was a creative step forward from their previous work. The duo signed on industry heavy hitters Andrew Dawson and Jesse Shatkin for the record. While Johnson and Schifino managed the same indie-rock gone mainstream influence, Pitchfork described their improved sound as a mashup of “grandiose hip-hop beats, whimsical trap appropriations, and candied dubstep drops, with occasional Auto-Tune and an air horn thrown in for color.”
After wrapping up their European tour in early April and receiving quite the response from weekend 1 of the 2016 Coachella Music Festival, Matt & Kim announced the release of their brand new four-song EP, “We Were The Weirdos” during their MainStage performance. Their first music video from the collection was made using a homemade camera rig, a unique technique that has continued the duo’s creative reputation.
Their July 27th free show will no-doubt carry the same energy of a classic Matt & Kim performance.
